Who We Are

Land Law is a boutique commercial property law firm which acts for national and international clients with properties across England and Wales. With two offices in the North of England the firm offers specialist legal services for all types of commercial property matters. The firm was founded in 1998 by former city lawyer Angus Whyte. Angus believed that it should be possible to deliver city quality legal services to clients for fair and reasonable fees by cutting past the bureaucracy and overheads which can plague larger firms. By adopting a highly innovative and visionary approach to working practices and use of IT, Angus turned that belief into the successful firm which Land Law is today.

Properties we do not deal with

While all our lawyers have the necessary legal knowledge and training to be able to transact individual residential houses and apartments, please note we do not routinely offer private client residential conveyancing services and we do not undertake residential plot sale work. To successfully provide these services in the current market we believe a law firm needs to employ a large team of well-trained paralegals and residential conveyancing solicitors who can quickly churn through the volume of work that residential conveyancing necessitates. That is something we do not have at Land Law.

We prefer to concentrate on what we are best at – high quality commercial property work. We believe there are firms better placed than we are to do this work for you, and we are always happy to provide recommendations should you need any. For this reason, we are also not on any residential lender panels and cannot assist with residential mortgages and residential remortgaging.

How can we add value?

We believe that the best law firms should be able to offer their clients more. More than just the best legal advice and outstanding service – we think that should be expected as a matter of course.

We endeavour to go further than this. We try to work in partnership with our clients. We take the time to get to know you and your business needs so we can tailor our services accordingly. Over time we hope you will view us as an integral part of your business’s professional team, here to support you with all your commercial property needs and we hope to gain a place as one of your trusted advisors – something we have achieved with many of our loyal clients over the years.

We also try to offer our clients added benefits. These include:

  • Excellent strategic advice. If taken at the outset strategic and structuring advice can help to ensure your transactions run smoothly and your disputes, if not avoided altogether (which can be possible in some circumstances), are concluded as quickly and cost effectively as possible.
  • Stress testing drafting. Our litigators at Land Law do more than just deal with disputes. They can also help you to avoid them altogether. Our litigators will often work with our real estate lawyers to stress test drafting – by looking at it from the perspective of how it might be interpreted in the event of a dispute. This helps us to propose drafting that, in addition to incorporating the agreed terms, also seeks to protect against disputes and unforeseen consequences.
  • Online client portal. Once your property information has been uploaded to our online client portal you, the other professionals you deal with and anyone you are transacting with can be given immediate and easy access to that information. The system is secure and we can give access to everything in a portfolio, just one property or just selected documents – depending on what is needed. This promotes collaborative working, speeds up transactions and cuts costs as we do not need to print and keep reems of paper, or wait for property packs to be delivered to our counterparts.
  • Training and Networking Events. We run a property conference every spring for clients and key contacts. Spread over an afternoon, delegates are invited to network over a buffet lunch. We then start the training where we, along with leading commercial property individuals and legal specialists who we regularly work with share their insights and wisdom through several short presentations on key real estate and litigation topics - providing continuing professional development for those of our clients who need it. The event finishes with a drinks reception and chance to chat with the speakers. All delegates are also provided with a goodie bag containing a few small items and treats to take home.

Our History

Land Law was founded by Angus Whyte in 1998; Angus believed it should be possible to deliver outstanding city centre quality legal services to clients for fair and reasonable fees by cutting past the bureaucracy and overheads that can plague larger firms. He set up Land Law on 1 June 1998 to prove the point – we are still here, and the partners continue with the same values.
